The Mountain People's Co-op in Nederland, Colorado was created as a local buying club in 1979. The Co-op is member-owned, and members pay shelf prices - which is 10% less than visiting shoppers do, they enjoy annual member appreciation specials and are able to order in bulk and attend monthly board meetings as well as vote in our annual elections. Of course, non-members are also welcome to shop and enjoy what we offer too.
The Co-op's mission is to promote good nutrition, health and social and economic welfare and is proud to offer local and organic produce and prepared foods. We accept EBT, cash and credit cards.
Come visit us!
Our friendly store managers and supervisors are responsible for overseeing all daily operations at the Co-op, not a small feat! You'll see them at the store on the regular orchestrating their great team of employees, ensuring we have great fresh organic produce, seasonal and gift items, and both hot and cold ready-to-eat food options that include vegan and gluten-free options.
Say hi when you see these special people (or any of our other great team members), feel free to ask them questions or give compliments, and, if you're a member, you can talk to them about placing bulk or special orders too.
Store Manager
Lisa grew up on a small farm outside Berthoud, Colorado. Some of her happiest memories were camping with her family outside Nederland in the summers with her 5 brothers and sisters. It was then that she fell in love with Nederland.
Shortly after moving here she started working in the kitchen at the Co-op and discovered her love of preparing beautiful and healthy foods. She's now worked in the Co-op for over 10 years and has worked in every position at the co-op, and is now running the Co-op as the General Manager.
She loves being constantly surprised by what the chef's come up with in the deli, and especially enjoys the hot foods and soups, and of course the smores cookies.
Lisa loves to hike, read, do yoga and listen to music, especially in the company of good friends.
Assistant Manager
Shayna is the Assistant Manager at the Mountain People’s Co-op, where they help oversee daily operations alongside Store Manager Lisa while also serving as a welcoming face for the community. One of Shayna’s favorite parts of the job is getting to be creative with the store - from handmade signs to building end caps and bringing new ideas to life. They also enjoy being someone people feel comfortable coming to, whether it’s for help finding things, answering questions, or just sharing a conversation. Shayna cares deeply about making the Co-op feel welcoming to everyone who walks through the door.
Although Shayna has lived in this mountain community since the age of three, they somehow overlooked the Co-op for years - aside from the occasional mission for honey sticks. After joining the team, they quickly realized they had been missing out on one of the community’s most special places and gained a deep appreciation for the sense of community within its walls.
Outside of work, Shayna enjoys spending time with their husband and pets, making memories with friends, dabbling in artistic hobbies, bowling, and relaxing by the creek.
As a member-owned business, the Mountain People's Co-op is overseen by a Board of Directors. The Board of Directors at the Mountain People's Co-op establish, maintain and oversee store by-laws and policies, assist the Store Manager and serve on our Finance, Outreach and Operations committees. Some members hold specific roles including Chair, Vice-Chair, Treasurer and Secretary.
The Board meets monthly or bi-monthly in open meetings that our employees and membership are welcome to attend. These meetings are listed on our homepage and in the store. Minutes from past meetings are linked to from the homepage and a hard-copy of recent meeting minutes can be found at the store. The Board also meets in closed meetings when necessary.
Board Members serve 2-year terms, and are voted in at the Annual Board meeting, which typically takes place in November (at the store).
Do you have a comment, concern, idea or question for the Board? Send it to us here. View our By-laws here.
Treasurer, Finance Committee
Mandy Kneer is a long-time Nederland resident who originally hails from Dayton Ohio. She has been on the Mountain People's Co-op Board of Directors for 20 years or so.
Mandy's favorite co-op deli item is the artichoke jalapeno dip. Yum!
Mandy considers herself a combo of music freak and a good book lover.
Her ideal day off in Nederland would start drinking cappuccino on her deck followed by a hike on Caribou Hill and the 505. Afterwards she'd stop in at the Co-op for a drink and/or tasty treat! She would end her day with food and drinks from Temaki Tornado at the Knotted Root.
Chair, Operations Committee
Erin and her partner decided to move to Nederland after visiting for a month and falling in love with its nature, community and the co-op! When Erin moved to Nederland in 2017, she was 9 months pregnant with her daughter. Before Ned, she and her family lived in Houston, TX. Erin is originally from a small town in Ontario, Canada.
Erin is currently in her 3rd term on the Board for MPC and serves as the Board's Chair. Erin teaches yoga, runs a local movement program called Ned Gymmies, is a doula and runs her own computer consulting business. She also enjoys homeschooling her kiddos.
She and her family love cooking from-scratch foods at home and love that the Co-op has high quality fresh and bulk foods available to them. They also love to grab the co-op's amazing soups for a nourishing warm meal in the winter, or the power balls, sandwiches and chickpea "chicken" salad for a lunch on the go.
Living in Ned satisfies Erin's love for nature and playfulness! She loves hiking and getting lost in the beauty of nature, harvesting local herbs and foraging for mushrooms. Most days you'll find her doing yoga, natural movement, walking, hiking, gardening, and playing with her children.
Secretary, Outreach Committee
Alex moved to Nederland in the Spring of 2023. The CoOp was one of her first stops to sign up for her membership before she even got the keys to her new place. Before Ned, she lived in the Jamestown area and before that, throughout the Denver area. The mountains have always been a special place to her.
Coming from a small town in the South, she always understood the value of community and quality food. After visiting Ned, she knew this was the place for her to spread some roots.
After starting a family of her own, making sure that she has access to fresh fruits and vegetables became an even higher priority than before. The CoOp provides that and so much more!
You can find her enjoying the outdoors - hiking and paddleboarding, doing yoga, experiencing live music, and finding ways to integrate creativity and movement into her life. She also teaches hula hoop and circus lessons to children and adults.
Operations Committee
Molly grew up in the small Colorado mountain town, Woodland Park, and moved to the Boulder area in 2000. A self-described crunchy, think outside the box person, Molly felt instantly at home in the little quirky town of Nederland and settled in 2002.
She has been a member of Mountain People CoOp for over 20 years, and she feels that the CoOp has quite literally helped her raise her 3 kids. Molly loves the CoOp because it is a reliable stop-in for high quality food and warm community. She makes it a point to visit CoOps in every city she visits.
Molly is also known as your local herbalist and birth doula, and when she isn’t making her daily trip to MPC, you can find her hiking the mountains with her family, harvesting herbal medicines, mushrooms, and drinking really good coffee!
Outreach Committee
When Sarah moved to Nederland in 2016, she was relieved to find healthy, conscious food access at the Mountain Peoples Co-op, immediately becoming a dedicated member. Her deep commitment to healthy eating began back in college when she was her grandmother's caregiver. After Sarah shifted her grandmother’s diet to whole foods, her grandmother—who had been given only three months to live—confounded expectations by outliving her diagnosing doctor by 18 months. Now, as a board member since June 2025, Sarah feels honored to serve the co-op. She truly believes the community is fortunate to have such a vital resource, and she is dedicated to promoting nutrition, health, and social and economic welfare throughout our mountain towns.
